The Eastern Railway has released its notification for the Act Apprenticeship Training Program for the year 2024-25, inviting eligible candidates to apply for training slots in its various divisions. This program, conducted under the Apprentices Act, 1961, offers Indian nationals a structured opportunity to gain technical expertise in trades such as fitter, welder, electrician, and more within the Eastern Railway. Applications were open exclusively online from September 24, 2024, and closed on October 23, 2024, at 5:00 PM.
This recruitment process, led by the Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) of Eastern Railway, spans multiple locations, including Howrah, Liluah, and Sealdah divisions, along with several workshops such as Jamalpur and Kanchrapara. The total number of training slots allocated may vary based on the actual requirements of the Eastern Railway units, and reservations are in place for SC, ST, OBC, PwBD, and ESM categories according to government regulations.
Applicants are advised to ensure they meet the age, educational, and medical requirements before applying. Only candidates who successfully complete both online application submission and document verification stages will be eligible for training. This apprenticeship, however, does not guarantee employment within the Eastern Railway, though preference will be given to trained candidates when filling future Level-1 recruitment positions.

Selection Process
The selection of apprentices for Eastern Railway will be strictly merit-based. Eligible candidates’ applications will be reviewed, and a merit list will be drawn based on the average percentage marks obtained in both matriculation and ITI examination, giving equal weightage to each. No centralized merit list will be prepared; rather, separate lists will be created for each trade and unit as per community categories. Candidates shortlisted through this merit process will be called for document verification, after which the final training placements will be determined.
In cases where candidates have the same merit score, preference will be given to the older candidate. If the age is also identical, the candidate who completed matriculation earlier will be considered first. Candidates meeting the merit criteria will be called for Document Verification (DV) up to 1.5 times the number of training slots available to accommodate any absenteeism or disqualifications.
Merit List Preparation Process
The merit list preparation process for Eastern Railway Apprentice recruitment is based on a calculated average of marks obtained in both the matriculation (10th standard) examination and ITI certification. For example, if a candidate scores 80.58% in matriculation and 91.68% in ITI, their merit score will be determined as the average, which is 86.13%. Candidates are advised to carefully enter their academic details in the application form, as any discrepancies found later can lead to cancellation of their application.
Once the merit list is prepared, candidates will be called for document verification in a 1:1 ratio according to their community and trade preferences. The RRC will take necessary precautions to ensure that candidates are allocated one slot in one trade and unit only, based on their preferences. This prevents duplication and ensures fair allocation. Candidates not initially selected may be given further opportunities based on available training slots, but only after the first set of candidates has been verified.
